When your worth starts to feel tied to what you accomplish

Perfectionism isn't always about wanting everything to be perfect. It doesn't always look like color-coded planners, straight A's, or impossibly high standards. Sometimes it looks like effortfully trying to micromanage things outside of your control, or feeling like you should always be doing more.

Many people begin to learn, often early in life, that achievement, productivity, or taking care of others earns approval, and creates a sense of safety. Over time, it can become difficult to separate who you are from what you accomplish – or what others want from what you want.

The people I work with are often thoughtful, capable, and deeply committed to the people and responsibilities in their lives. They give ceaselessly and hold themselves to standards they would never expect from anyone else.

Learning whose expectations you're living by

Our beliefs about ourselves don't develop in isolation. They grow out of our relationships, experiences, cultures, and environments. Sometimes these beliefs help us succeed. Other times they shape the way we move through the world long after they've stopped serving us.

You may find yourself measuring your worth by your productivity, saying yes when you'd rather say no, or feeling responsible for keeping everyone else happy. At some point, it's easy to stop asking yourself what you need and start focusing on what everyone else expects of you.

Living this way can contribute to anxiety, burnout, and a growing sense of disconnection from yourself.

Coming back to yourself

Therapy offers an opportunity to become more aware of the expectations you've been carrying, understand where they came from, and decide which ones still belong in your life.

Together we'll explore the patterns that keep you feeling stuck and strengthen your ability to recognize your own needs, values, and limits. Rather than relying on fear, pressure, or external validation to guide your decisions, you'll begin building trust in your own voice and your own experience.

That doesn't mean you'll stop caring, striving, or setting meaningful goals. It means those goals can begin to reflect what matters to you, not just what you've learned to expect of yourself.

ready to take the next step?

If you're feeling exhausted by the pressure to always be more, do more, or get everything “right,” therapy can help you reconnect with yourself and create a way of moving through life that no longer involves abandoning yourself. Reach out to schedule a complimentary consultation.
